I recommend you watch this video, just so you can see how the lock works. Sometimes people have to try it a few times.

Your box will be in a storage container with your name on it. This is what the bins look like:


There is no wifi at the resupply. If you have one, I recommend bringing a garmin inreach. It’s a good safety backup for being in the backcountry. 

Water updates, 8/31:

  • American Spring is not very appetizing recently. 
  • There is still water at El Nogal trailhead in Rio de Fernandez de Taos
  • There is water at Rio Chiquito, but not directly oppsoite Drake Canyon. You have to walk just 1000 feet east on FR 437, then look in the bushes and there’s water. Rio Chiquito gets significantly wetter from there, though it does go dry for a few hundred feet. 
  • The covered well a bit NOBO from La Cueva Peak has reports of being really funky. There is a seep that directly crosses the trail about a mile or so SOBO before it. That seep is probably the best water source around. It is really shallow, but again – look down the slope a little for tiny pools. There is water there. 
  • La Cueva Field has water but you’ll have to look for it in small pools under the bushes. 
  • There is water along FR 442 in a spring box. It needs to be filtered (it has mosquito larvae) but there was decent, clear water, and at least 8 inches of it, in that spring box recently. 
  • Rito de la Olla has never had any bad reports – that’s fine. 
  • Rio Grande del Rancho has also always been reported as fine. 
  • If you dislike blowdown or even brief off-trail bushwhacking, stick to the alt route of FR 442. 
  • The alt route on Ojitos Trail, between FR 442 and La Cueva Lake (which is reported dry), does have a few seeps. I’ve easily gotten water from two of those seeps in prior years, but this year is terrible for water. 
  • All the way over to Santa Fe… Little Tesuque is probably still dry.
  • All the water sources in between are fine. The Taos side is the dry part.
