I hiked the trail northbound from May 8th to the 16th.  Every day I felt gratitude for the deserts, forests, meadows, mountains, lakes, streams, and plants, insects, animals, weather, and physical and mental challenges and pleasures that made up my experience.  Highlights were seeing many things for the first time: several wildflowers, an Albert’s squirrel, and a cinnamon bear.  I didn’t climb any peaks on this trip (I turned back from Pecos Baldy because of snow).  I met only two groups of backpackers: a couple heading up to find snow to practice axe and crampon skills, and a group of young men who were camped where I had planned to sleep.  They kindly warned me that they intended to be loud later that night!  : )

I basically carried my ice axe and microspikes for 131 of the 132 mile trail, but I was very thankful to have them for the descent to Katherine Lake and the descent from the Santa Barbara Divide.  Many other parts of the trail were snow covered but easily walked with bare boots and a hiking pole.

The trail challenged my 70-year-old body and also energized my inner light.  I am grateful for Mother Nature, my family and friends, the trail builders and maintainers, and Pam Neely for these life-gift experiences. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
